THAI NETWORK FOR AGROFORESTRY EDUCATION

Academic Collaborative Program of ThaiNAFE Members

Two members of ThaiNAFE , i.e. Faculty of Agriculture, Chiang Mai University and Faculty of Forestry, Kasetsart University will jointly collaborate in the selected topic course - "Agroforestry system on natural resource and environment management "of Master degree program. The main interest of this topic is the application of agroforestry system in reducing and protecting smog from forest fire and plantation burning. The rationale was owing to the fact that during March to early April 2007, many provinces in northern Thailand, especially Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Mae Hongson were strongly confront with a problem of smog. The level of dust particles smaller than 10 microns in Chiang Mai's air had reached 284 micrograms per cubic metre, while the standard level for these particles in the air is 120 micrograms per cubic metre. The problem was so serious that the government has to declare the regions as an emergency control zone in a bid to empower authorities to tackle the source of the problem at that time.
The course content consists of;

1. Classroom lecture and discussion.
2. Self learning through websites which introduced by lecturers. Reports, and classroom presentations are also required.
3. Students of both universities will approach and interview the villagers in the case study areas of Chiang Mai for 10 days.

ThaiNAFE expected that this project will act as a collaborative model for other courses of Agroforestry program and also expected to have more members from other universities which will lead to the academic collaborative among ASEAN countries.
